Con letra de Bruce Springsteen, Because the Night fue grabada por el Patti Smith Group (Patti Smith, Lenny Kaye, Ivan Kral, Jay Dee Daugherty y Richard Sohl) en las sesiones del album Easter, en 1978. Primer single del album, se convirtió de inmediato en un éxito absoluto y en una de las canciones bandera de Patti Smith.
